Crime rate declines in Gujarat: NCRB Report

Gandhinagar, September 16, 2022: According to the National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB) report ‘Crime in India’ for 2021, Gujarat has seen a significant decline in various categories of crimes compared to the national level data. The state government has introduced significant reforms in laws over the time has ensured peace and safety in Gujarat.

These NCRB annual reports have been crucial over the years in understanding the crime rates in various States and Union Territories. The crime report covers murder, attempted murder, rape, kidnapping, robbery, etc.

Overall, Gujarat’s crime rate has dropped to 11.9, much lower than the national average of 30.2. In 2021, the murder crime rate in Gujarat stood at 1.4 (National Avg: 2.1). The rate of kidnapping in the state has been constantly dipping with a crime rate of 2.3 in 2021 (2.7 (2019) and 3.0 (2018)) against the national crime rate of 7.4. It is alarming that the national average for crimes against women stands at 64.5, while Gujarat known for women’s safety has a much lower rate of 22.1. States such as Assam (168.3), Delhi (147.6), Telangana (119.7), Rajasthan (105.4), West Bengal (74.6), Kerala (73.3), and Andhra Pradesh (67.2) all have very high rates of crime against women.

Another noteworthy figure is offenses against the human body (murder, attempted murder, grievous, injury, rape, etc) where Gujarat’s score is 28.6, way below than the All India crime score of 80.5.Gujarat ranks 31st among the total 36 states/UTs in the crimes of offences against human body. With the crime rate for theft of 15.2 (All India: 42.9), Gujarat ranks 27th in this category.

Reforming laws and use of technology

The state has been regularly amending the old laws. Harsh punishments and longer jail sentences forcrimes under the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime (GCTOC), Land Grabbing Act, and Criminal Amendment Act, along with crimes such as chain snatching and human trafficking have instilled doubts and fears in the minds of criminals.
Besides, under VISWAS project, the police departments have installed over seven thousand CCTV cameras across the districts. Issuing E-memos are being issued against traffic violators in 41 cities. Moreover, the use of Pocket Cop, e-GujCop, Drone Cameras, 1091 Women Helpline, 181 ABHAYAM Helpline, 1096 Jeevan Astha Helpline, 100 Police Helpline, and 1095 Traffic Helpline have come to the aid of the citizens helping them in combating crimes.
