Stray dog menace: Rajkot Civil hospital sets up special ward and rabies clinic as dog bites cases rise

Rajkot: Amidst a huge rise in dog bite cases, a special ward has come up at Rajkot Civil Hospital, and a rabies clinic will also be operational in the OPD building of the hospital.

Over the last three months, 1116 people have fallen prey to dog bites, with 330 cases in December 2022, 357 cases in January 2023, and 429 people attacked by dogs in February 2023.

Rajya Sabha MP Rambhai Mokariya said, “Dog bite ward and related facilities have been opened here as there is about a 50% rise in dog bite cases.”

RS Trivedi, Civil Superintendent at Rajkot PDU Hospital, said, “No person can be saved after contracting rabies, which is why it is considered a deadly disease. The only way to protect oneself is to seek primary treatment within 24 hours of a dog bite. Vaccines and haemoglobin treatment can be lifesavers in such cases.” DeshGujarat
