Two Sudanese women held by Surat customs for carrying 1 kg gold jewellery

Surta: The customs department has nabbed two Sudanese women wearing gold jewelry of 1 kg weight from Surat airport.
Two women wearing burqa were checked on the basis of suspicion by female officers on Monday. Both women had worn gold jewelry totaling 1 kg. The jewelry looked new and shiny. The women replied during their inquiry that they came to Surat to purchase clothes from the Surat textile market and had bought gold jewelry from Dubai.
The customs department seized the jewelry. There is a difference of Rs 3000 to 4000 between the prices of 10-gram gold in Surat and Dubai. There is a 5 percent refund on VAT (Value Added Tax) on the purchase of Gold in Dubai. There is a 10 to 12 percent basic customs duty on Gold in India. The females are used as carriers by making them wear gold jewelry, in cases of gold smuggling. DeshGujarat
