Gujarat contributes 5% of India’s total fish production

New Delhi: The state of Gujarat contributed about 5% to the country’s total fish production, with 8.74 lakh tonnes of fish produced during the year 2021-22. While the total fish production in India for the same period was 162 lakh metric tonnes, stated the Union government in Parliament on Wednesday.
According to the state fisheries department, the 8.74 lakh tonnes comprised 6.88 lakh tonnes of marine fish and 1.86 lakh tonnes of inland fish.
The state has a population of 5.59 lakh fishermen residing in 1,058 fishing villages, out of which 2.18 lakh are presently active. In 2020-21, the government registered 28,355 mechanical boats and 8,625 non-mechanical boats, resulting in a total of 36,980 boats. The revenue generated from fish production in Gujarat during 2021-22 was Rs. 11,220 crores, of which Rs. 7,659 crores was attributed to marine fishing and Rs. 3,561 crores to inland fishing.
