Surat court sentences Rahul Gandhi to 2-year jail, releases him on bail

Surat: Sessions court in Surat has given two years sentence to Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case under IPC sections 499 and 500. The sessions court has suspended the sentence for 30 days, so that convict Rahul Gandhi can appeal in a higher court. The court has given bail to Rahul on Rs. 10,000 bond.

Then Congress president Rahul Gandhi at a rally on 13 April 2019 in Karnataka’s Kolar wondered how come “all thieves have Modi as the common surname”. Surat-based BJP MLA and former minister Purnesh Modi had filed a defamation case against Rahul. Rahul Gandhi was present at the court when the verdict was announced.

Under Sections 499 and 500, a punishment with simple imprisonment for a term that may extend to two years, or with a fine, or with both, is mentioned in the Indian Penal Code. It was observed that Rahul Gandhi is a lawmaker and if lawmakers violate the law, then they should attract the highest sentence provisioned.
