Gujarat ports on alert as cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ approaches: Fishermen warned to stay away from deep Sea

Ahmedabad: All ports in Gujarat have been instructed to hoist a distant warning ( DW II ) signal as the deep depression over the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea has shifted in a northward direction and developed into a cyclonic storm named “Biparjoy,” according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has issued fishermen warning asking them to refrain from venturing into the deep sea due to this weather phenomenon.

“The cyclonic storm “Biparjoy” (pronounced as “Biporjoy”) over east central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea remained practically stationary during last 3 hours and lay centred at 0230 hours IST of 07 th June 2023 over the same region near latitude 12.5°N and longitude 66.0°E, about 900 km west-southwest of Goa, 1020 km southwest of Mumbai, 1090 km south-southwest of Porbandar and 1380 km south of Karachi. It is likely to move nearly northwards and intensify gradually into a severe cyclonic storm over east central Arabian Sea during next 06 hour and further into a very severe cyclonic storm over the same region during subsequent 24 hours”, said the IMD bulletin.

Fishermen Warning

For North Gujarat coast: Squally wind with speed reaching 45-55 kmph from Mainly Westerly direction very likely to prevail along and off North Gujarat Coast. Wind speed in gust may temporarily reach 65 kmph. Sea will be rough with waves from Mainly Westerly direction along and off North Gujarat coast on 06th June 2023.
~ No warning for the north Gujarat coast (from day 2 to day 4 ) .
~ Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off the North Gujarat coast.

South Gujarat coast : No warning for fishermen for day 1 ( 6th June 2023 ) ,however, fishermen are advised not to venture into Central Arabian Sea (Eastcentral and adjoining areas of westcentral Arabian Sea) from 7th June onwards. Fishermen out at open sea are advised to return near the coast.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into:

(i) Southeast and adjoining central & southwest Arabian Sea on 6th June
(ii) Central and adjoining areas of the south Arabian Sea during 7th -9 th June
(iii) Central and adjoining areas of north & south Arabian Sea on 10th June.
(iv) Along & off along & off Kerala-Karnataka coasts, Lakshadweep-Maldives areas during 6th and 7 th and along & off Konkan-Goa- Maharashtra coasts during 8th -10th June.
(v) Those out at sea are advised to return to the coast
