Rainfall likely in Gujarat during June 9-12; Fishermen warning till June 14 amid Cyclone Biparjoy

Gandhinagar: The very severe cyclonic storm “Biparjoy” over the east-central Arabian Sea has moved nearly north-northwestwards at a speed of 7 kmph in the past 6 hours. As of 23:30 hours IST on June 7th, 2023, it was centered over the same region near latitude 13.6°N and longitude 66.0°E, approximately 970 km south-southwest of Porbandar. The storm is expected to gradually intensify further over the next 48 hours and continue moving nearly north northwestwards for the next 3 days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning to fishermen, advising them to avoid venturing into the deep sea due to this weather phenomenon. The Meteorological Center has also predicted rainfall in parts of Gujarat over a span of 4 days, from June 9th to 12th.

According to IMD, ” Total suspension of fishing operations over Central Arabian Sea (Eastcentral and adjoining areas of west central Arabian Sea) from 07th June onwards till 12th June 2023; westcentral and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea during 12-14th June.”

Fishermen out at open sea are advised to return to the coast.

A similar weather pattern is anticipated in the districts of Saurashtra, specifically Amreli and Bhavnagar.

On June 10th, a light thunderstorm with lightning and surface wind of 30-40 kmph (in gusts) is expected, along with light rain at isolated places in the districts of the South Gujarat region, including Surat, Navsari, Dang, Valsad, Bharuch, Tapi, and in Daman, Dadara Nagar Haveli. This weather pattern is also likely to affect the districts of Saurashtra, such as Junagadh, Amreli, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, and Diu.

On June 11th, isolated places in the districts of the South Gujarat region, namely Vadodara, Surat, Navsari, Dang, Narmada, Valsad, Bharuch, Tapi, and in Daman, Dadara Nagar Haveli, are likely to experience a light thunderstorm with lightning and surface wind of 30-40 kmph (in gusts), accompanied by light rain. The districts of Saurashtra, including Rajkot, Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, and Diu, are also expected to be affected.
